Angela Crandall releases a heartfelt rendition of the East African classic love song, Malaika, in her latest musical release. Pianist Rich Crandall accompanies with percussionist Rolando Sanchez and Dean Taba on bass in this two-song CD with Summer Days on the “flip side.”
Angela aptly captures the anguish and bittersweet quality in this Swahili lyrics about poverty and ill-fated love. Angela first learned the song summer of 2008 while in Tanzania where, upon introducing herself as “malaika” (angel), locals greeted her with the refrain of this famous East-African song once popularized by Miriam Makeba. After having the song sung to her on dozens of occasions, she decided she must learn the song herself so as to be able to sing along with the Tanzanians.
